Purified water is mankind's most precious chemical
Water is one of the prerequisites of life. Oulu is constantly developing more effective, environmentally friendly ways to keep this important element in good condition. Pure drinking water is already becoming a privilege in today's world. With the latest technology more and more people can be provided with clean water.
University of Oulu
Research in water resources and wastewater engineering is conducted in close cooperation with environmental authorities, industry, and end-users in Oulu. The main areas of research at the University of Oulu are
- wastewater treatment
- industrial water cycles
- water chemistry
- wetland hydrology
- catchment restoration and river engineering
- groundwater engineering
The research concentrates on describing, modeling, and solving environmental problems typical for northern waters, soils, water supply, and wastewater.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has several research and development clusters, and many of them are conducting research related to water, which covers a wide range of issues. VTT's Optical Instrumentation Centre in Oulu has expertise in online optical instruments and measurement technologies. VTT's Optical Instrumentation Centre cooperates closely with and carries out several projects for the Finnish process industry. The Centre has experience in instrumentation and monitoring of water circulation in paper mills, monitoring ballast water, and monitoring fermentation processes and nutrients in wastewater.
Oulu University of Applied Sciences
Oulu University of Applied Sciences offers optional studies in water supply and hydraulics (sanitation). This area is divided into water and wastewater engineering; hydrology, hydraulics, water protection, and restoration; and construction of water structures. In the area of water and wastewater treatment, a new laboratory has been set up that includes a comprehensive pilot plant for treating drinking water.
