Air Guitar World Championships will be celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2010

- What started as a joke in 1996 has grown into a seriously fun competition of semi-absurd performance art that appeals to a wide international audience and media. At the age of fifteen Air Guitar World Championships is still young, frisky and wild - The birthday mayhem will take over the World Capital of Air Guitar on 25-28 August 2010.

The peaceful message of Air Guitar is nowadays passed on all around in the world: In 2010 National Air Guitar Championships will be held in several countries including Australia, Canada, US, Denmark, Colombia, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Czech Republic, France, New Zealand, UK, Germany, Estonia, Romania and Switzerland. The current World Champion Sylvain ‘Günther Love’ Quimene (FR) will defend his title against the national champions in the Air Guitar World Championships Final in Oulu on 27 August 2010.

In addition to being a celebration of the semi-absurd performance art itself, Air Guitar World Championships has a peaceful ideology behind it. According to the ideology of the Air Guitar, war’s end, climate change stops and all bad things disappear, if all the people in the world played the Air Guitar. The idea of ‘If everyone held an Air Guitar in their hands, no one could hold a gun’ has appealed to the people across the Globe to join the peaceful air-forces.

Air guitar playing is about surrounding yourself to the power of music without an actual instrument. It neither requires specific places of performance or skill. Therefore, everybody is equally invited to play the air guitar, regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation or social status.
