New success story

Oulu represents internationally top know-how in the ICT sector, but traditional branches of industry such as pulp and paper, chemistry, and steel are also strong in Oulu. Oulu's newest, rapidly developing focal area is environmental technology, Cleantech, which may well become Oulu's next success story. One of Oulu's particular strenghts is all-round expertise in water and air purification technologies. 

In the past Oulu was known for its tar and salmon. Today it is an attractive center of expertise in which research and development carried out by the University of Oulu and companies have a long tradition. Finland's second largest university is located in Oulu. Oulu is also the main location of Europe's largest technology center, which offers high-quality facilities. Oulu is also a gateway to Europe and Russia.
